The Oath of the Fisherman

Once upon a time, there was a skillful fisherman who had a bad habit that he liked to swear no matter the wish was in terms with the reality or not. Even though his decision was impractical, he would never change his mind.

One day, hearing that the octopus was the most expensive aquatic product in the market, he made up his mind that he would go fishing for nothing except the octopus. However, what God brought him were crabs instead of octopus. So the fisherman returned with an empty fishing basket. Only when he returned did he know that the crabs were the best hot-sellers in the market. He was regretful and swore that he would only catch crabs next time.

The next morning, he paid all his attention to searching the crabs. Unfortunately, this time all he could catch were just the octopus! Again, he returned with nothing in his basket. Lying in bed, he told himself that he would fish either the crabs or the octopus in the next day.

On the third morning, the fisherman stuck strictly to his oath, seeking crabs and octopus. However, God still played jokes on him and brought him everything except crabs and octopus!

This poor man had no chance to go fishing any more, for he was starved to death.

It is only a fable. No man is so foolish as that fisherman. However, there are some similar stupid pledges as what the fisherman made. Many news agencies report that the wishful parents drive their children to set up some goals that can’t be fulfilled. For example, a boy was very clever and he got good marks in his school reports every terms. Thus his parents made their own wishful determination that their son should only apply to Qinghua University and Beijing University. The boy was under more and more pressure. He got only 4 hours’ sleep everyday and kept on such a timetable for several months. Then he got sick before the entrance exam and failed in the exam.

It is unavoidable that there are always some discrepancy between the target and the reality in our life. People have to learn how to adjust themselves to the situation, keeping the relative balance between the dream and the reality.

To have a dream and stick to one’s determination are necessary. However, man is flexible and life is colorful. We do have many choices!
